Hiring Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator was controversial, though Dallas did allow 25 points per game last season. Nevertheless, the veteran coordinator will overhaul the entire defensive front seven. DeMarcus Ware moves from outside linebacker to defensive end. He may need a running mate opposite of him because Anthony Spencer expects to test free agency. The Cowboys could also use a starting defensive tackle, as they shift their defensive line. The backend of their secondary has given them problems the last couple of years, so finding a solution may take priority. Offensively, finding a starting center must take priority over any skill positions.
Teams Needs: C, DE, DT, & SS
GM Jerry Reese has done a great job of assembling one of the most talented rosters in the league. That makes New York’s failure to reach the postseason all the more bizarre. The Giants first priority will be replacing potential departed free agents. Martellus Bennett had a strong first season in New York, but he played on just a one-year contract, and the Giants will have either to find a replacement or pay him the market value. William Beatty also hits free agency, so left tackle takes priority given the investment in two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. The secondary needs some improvement, as CB Corey Webster was the target of many opposing quarterbacks. Finally, the Giants will need to target an outside linebacker to compete for Michael Boley’s old job.
Team Needs: CB, OLB, OLT, & TE
All signs point to new head coach Chip Kelly switching Philadelphia to a 3-4 alignment on defense. The Eagles already have two lineman capable of starting at defensive end (Cullen Jenkins & Fletcher Cox), but they’ll need a nose tackle to solidify the unit. In addition, they must address their atrocious secondary with upgrades at cornerback and strong safety. Despite the announcement that Michael Vick will return in ‘13, Kelly may use this off-season to identity his quarterback of the future.
Team Needs: CB, NT, QB, & SS
A year ago, Washington was beyond repair and many were wondering whether Mike Shanahan was out of touch with today’s NFL. One year later, Washington fans have reason for hope in ‘13. The Redskins did a great job of upgrading their roster last off-season, but they’re far from a finished. They need to surround QB Robert Griffin III with more talent, especially at right tackle and wide receiver. Pierre Garcon is a nice target, but he’s not a game-changer, and Washington’s offense is a game-changing wideout away from becoming among the elite. The secondary was atrocious last year. Washington was one of three teams to allow 4,500-plus passing yards. Finding a cornerback to push DeAngelo Hall, and solidifying the safety position are also on their need’s list.
Team Needs: CB, ORT, SS, & WR
