We ended up going 4-5 with our week 4 college football predictions with a number of close losses. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were half a point away from covering the spread, while LSU was a field goal away from doing the same against Auburn. Our predictions on West Virginia staying competitive against Maryland were terrible but we have a better idea of the strengths and weaknesses of these college football teams in week 5.
College Football Year-to-Date Record: 4-5
Miami (FL) -16 at South Florida
South Florida is an absolute mess this year and their offense won't move the ball at all here. Miami just needs to score 17 to cover the point spread and they will.
South Carolina -6.5 at Central Florida
Central Florida is no joke and the odds here are giving them plenty of respect, but I'm just not convinced they are at South Carolina's level yet. Go with the Gamecocks to win by 10.
Oklahoma State -18 at West Virginia
West Virginia looked awful yet again but I'm kind of dumb and will continue to ride them here. The Mountaineers can score points against Oklahoma State and I think we might see a shootout.
Florida State -23 at Boston College
The Seminoles are looking great and their freshman quarterback hasn't made many mistakes. That being said, the youngster is on the road against an experienced defense and I think BC can keep it within 20.
LSU at Georgia -3.5
These teams are very similar in that they have excellent offenses but are lacking behind defensively. LSU is more trustworthy on that side of the ball so I'm taking the points on the underdog.
Oklahoma -3.5 at Notre Dame
Oklahoma doesn't have much of a defense but Notre Dame's offense isn't consistent enough to exploit it. The Fighting Irish don't have nearly as strong of a defense this year and will give up lots of points while getting blown out.
Wake Forest at Clemson -28.5
Clemson should score 30-40 points in this game but Wake Forest has some talent on offense and could put up 20 while covering this large point spread.
Ole Miss at Alabama -14
The Rebels are for real this season and Alabama's offense isn't as impressive as last year's team. Look for the Crimson Tide to pull out a win at home but only by 8.
Arizona at Washington -9.5
These teams both have strong offenses and I don't particularly trust either defense. Look for Arizona to use play action passes to keep the game close as they lose by only 7.
Texas A&M -14 at Arkansas
Arkansas will have quarterback Brandon Allen back but since he can't play defense he won't help stop the Aggies from scoring 40 or more. That being said, Texas A&M hasn't stopped anyone this season so take the underdog.
Florida -11.5 at Kentucky
Florida has a great defense and a poor offense but they should be strong enough to move the ball on Kentucky while winning in dominant fashion.
Wisconsin at Ohio State -6.5
The wrong team is favored in this Big Ten rivalry game and I'll be taking the points and Wisconsin. The Badgers are impressive on both sides of the ball and Ohio State's offense won't be nearly as strong against a legitimate defense.
Stanford -9 at Washington State
Stanford doesn't always win pretty but they almost always win. Washington State will make enough mistakes that Stanford will get a comfortable victory in week 5.
California at Oregon -37
The Ducks like to blow out opposing teams and California is at an all-time low right now. Look for Oregon to make a statement in this conference game with a 50-point victory.
Fresno State -17.5 at Hawaii
The Bulldogs have an impressive passing attack but their defense is bad. That being said, Hawaii's offense doesn't scare me at all and Fresno State blows out the Warriors on the island.
