Will Villanova's loss help move someone into that No. 1 seed?
By Reel Robinson

Conference games started to heat up yesterday, with teams running low on fuel after the long grueling season, now you are starting to see the effects. Villanova took on Seton Hall in the first round of the Big East tournament. Villanova is the No. 3 team in the country and looking to lock up one of those No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. Their 28-4 record and 16-2 record in the Big East conference is an impressive résumé. The fact they took control of their conference from the beginning makes their case when the committee gets together and picks bracket placement this Sunday. That being said a first round lost in the Big East tournament to a mediocre 17-16 Seton Hall team could open the door for some other conference champions to get that No. 1.

The committee considers a lot of factors when choosing the one seeds. Villanova has lost four games and two of those were blowouts to newly added Big East foes Creighton led by John Wooden Award nominee Doug McDermott. Villanova had no answer for McDermott in both meetings. With teams like Michigan and Lousiville playing well with opportunities to win their respective conference tournaments the pressure may be on Villanova.

Seton Hall Center Eugene Teague led the way in the game yesterday. His 19 points and 12 rebounds kept the game at arm’s reach for Seton Hall all day. Villanova shot a miserable 37 percent and had no answer for Teague. It was a close game to the end and with a buzzer beater by guard Sterling Gibbs Seton Hall advanced to the next round to face Providence.

Villanova will now have to sit and watch to see if the few teams on their heels will take the opportunity to put themselves in that No. 1 seed. Michigan takes on Illinois in their first game of the Big Ten Tournament. No. 8 Michigan is coming off a season where they lost in the championship game to Louisville. They are hungry and have been playing that way over the last month and a half. Winning the Big Ten conference outright for the first time since 1987, this wolverine team looks like a team on a mission. A No. 1 seed will only motivate them more. Then there is the defending champions No. 5 Louisville with a strong 26-5 record who can also make a argument for one of those last No. 1 seeds with a AAC conference title.

Arizona deserves a No. 1 seed in my opinion so if they can win a few games in the Pac 12 tournament they should lock up the third available spot leaving one left for the rest of the field. Teams like Kansas, Virginia and Duke are among the few who have legitimate hopes at the No. 1 as well. The committee has a tough few days ahead them with watching and grading performances. Florida and Wichita State are the solidified one seeds so they have to look at six teams for two spots so somebody will be disappointed. Who do you think will be a No. 1 seed when it is all said and done?

Teams with No. 1 seed Hopes

Michigan: 23-7 Big Ten regular season Champs

Duke: 24-7 ACC regular season champs

Louisville: 26-5 AAC regular season champs

Arizona: PAC 12 regular season Champs
