Region to Region Breakdown: South Region
By Reel Robinson

The No. 1 overall seed in the tournament this year is Florida. The SEC powerhouse grabbed that seed by dominating the SEC regular season, going undefeated and then doing the same in the conference championship. After Kentucky put up a valiant effort in the conference title game, Florida withstood their pursuit to cut down the nets once again. Florida is one of those veteran teams that play suffocating defense on their opponents. The South Region isn’t going to be an easy route for the Gators to travel. I will take a closer look at the potential teams that could upset Florida.

The No. 2 seed in the south is Kansas, who has looked out of character since their freshman big man Joel Embiid went down with back issues. If he can’t make a full comeback before the tournament rode starts to get rough for the Jayhawks their chances may dwindle. They still possess one of the other top freshman in the country in Andrew Wiggins, so I am expecting him to get them far enough to get Embiid back for the Sweet 16 or further. Syracuse is another strong contender in the south. After starting the season with 25 straight wins, the Orangemen have struggled losing five of their last seven games including a first round knockout in the ACC tournament against NC State. Kansas will take on No. 15 seed Eastern Kentucky in the first round and Syracuse will face a very good No. 14 seed in Western Michigan.

The No. 4 is Pac-12 tourney champs UCLA, who defeated Arizona to get that position. They have been playing extremely strong to end the season and could cause some trouble in the region. They'll take on No. 13 Tulsa who can be a surprise team if UCLA doesn’t come prepared. The No. 5 seed VCU is a veteran team who has played deep into the tournament the last few years. VCU will take on a great No. 12 seed in Stephan F. Austin who only lost two games all season.

The No. 6 seed is Ohio State who could’ve received a generous seeding with their lackluster performance this year. They're vulnerable and will take on a really good Dayton squad who is looking for the upset. The sleeper in this region to me is No. 7 New Mexico. I believe they can be the team to upset the No. 2 seed Kansas in the second round if they can fight off a very good Stanford squad. The interesting matchup between No. 8 Colorado and No. 9 Pittsburgh will be a very good game and may set an upset alert in round two against the field’s favorite Florida.

I think out of all the No. 1 seeds Florida has a good chance to be upset. They have played in the weakest of the big conferences this year. The SEC was mediocre to say the least and if you have a grade A guard you can give the Gators trouble. Napier of UCONN showed that when they defeated Florida early in the season. We will see how the tournament plays out in the South Region. I have New Mexico going to the Final Four from the south (my prediction).

Who do you think will take the South Region? Let me know in a comment.
