Region to Region Breakdown: West Region
By Reel Robinson

As the games begin and teams start to push themselves to new levels in order to continue their tournament dreams, I will keep breaking down the match ups and potential matchups of the regions. The committee has made the best effort possible to spread the talent around this year. Arizona who has played top notch basketball all season took the No. 1 seed in the West Region. If they can withstand a few early round matchups out in California which gives them a slight home advantage with all the Wildcat fans that will make that six hour trip from Tucson. The West Region is very competitive and the Wildcats will need stern efforts from Pac-12 player of the year Nick Johnson and freshman of the year Aaron Gordon to keep advancing.

The No. 2 seed in the West Region is Wisconsin, who pummeled No. 15 America on day one of the NCAA tournament. They'll take on Oregon in the third round on Saturday. Oregon took care of BYU advancing the inconsistent Pac-12 team. The No. 4 seed in the west region is San Diego State, a tough opponent who narrowly escaped New Mexico State in last night's game where they made mistakes down the stretch almost costing them the game. They overcame the mistakes to take a 73-69 victory advancing them to the third round to face North Dakota State who upset the No. 5 seed Oklahoma in impressive fashion with a game tying three pointer that lift the game to overtime and then closing them out in OT.

Today the rest of the west will play to see who advances. Eighth seeded Gonzaga will have a tough matchup against one of the nation's best scorers and potential top 10 NBA draft pick Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State had its struggles throughout the season, but this is the perfect time for their star player to act like one. This may be the best game of the day. Whichever team wins will setup a great game against the tough d playing Wildcats in the next round. The matchup between stingy defender Johnson against scoring threat Smart is something I have been looking forward to if the Cowboys can withstand the Zags.

No. 6 Baylor will take on a mediocre Big Ten foe in Nebraska, but we'll see how they handle each other. This game could go either way. Both teams are pretty inconsistent so it'll be a hard pick, but I do have Baylor advancing. My team to win the west region against all my Arizona believers is Creighton, who is led by the potential player of the year Doug McDermott. If you have been reading any of my earlier post, you would know I am a big fan of this guy. One of the elite scorers in college basketball and I expect him to put his team on his back for a long tournament run. Creighton will have to take down Arizona to get to the Final Four and I expect them to do so. They take on No. 14 seed Louisiana Lafayette, with a win they'll be looking at the winner of the Baylor vs. Nebraska game.

The West Region isn't as difficult as some of the other regions especially for the Wildcats who will be closer to their home than any other No. 1 seed in the tournament. That tenacious defense by the Wildcats will get them far, but I think they will have no answer for sharp shooting teams like Creighton and Wisconsin. Who do you have winning the West Region?
