2014 Fantasy Football: Top 100
By Matt Horkman

Use the big board below for standard league purposes. I will release a PPR version within the next 24 hours.

Running backs dominate the top 100. A total of 16 makeup the first 30 rankings. Simply put, running back is fantasy football’s most valuable position. You can get a wide receiver in round four with value that may compare with a receiver drafted in round two. You can’t say the same for running backs. The difference between a round two running back and round four running back is astronomical. That’s why it’s important to target running backs early and often.

Quarterback is the most important position in the NFL, but its fantasy value is rather controversial. Just five quarterbacks land in the top 50, with Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Peyton Manning landing in the top 25. The best strategy perMatthew Staffordtaining to a quarterback is simply to wait. The league is so pass-happy that a number of quarterbacks will account for 30-plus touchdowns and approach 5,000-plus yards. In fact, my projections indicate 11 will account for 30 touchdowns. Starting only one quarterback also devalues the position. In leagues starting two quarterbacks, I highly recommend targeting one in the first two rounds. Most leagues just use one, though, so your best strategy is to wait, especially if your league rewards just four points per passing touchdown. Let a couple of owners take quarterbacks in the first four rounds. You can stock more important positions (namely running back and wide receiver), yet still come away with Andrew Luck, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan, or Cam Newton in round five and beyond.

With that said, it’s true that if a quarterback has a record-setting season (Manning last year) then he can carry you to a fantasy championship. Betting on a historically significant season, though, is a risky play. I wouldn’t recommend it.
