Week 4 of the college football season saw mixed results as we made some nice predictions but also suggested a few duds. The final tally in week 4 was 3-4 as we correctly predicted Washington State to given Oregon a dogfight, Mississippi State to win outright against LSU, and for Oklahoma to cover the odds versus West Virginia, but we whiffed on Florida State winning big over Clemson without Jameis Winston and BYU dominating defensively against Virginia. There are plenty of intruiging week 5 college football matchups on the schedule in week 5 and we'll look to make back the small amount we lost with our predictions last time out.
College Football Year-to-Date Record: 8-9
#7 Baylor -21.5 at Iowa State
The Bears have scored big points for years but sometimes their defense struggles to handle the fast pace the offense sets which allows opponents to score quite a bit as well. I haven't been impressed at all with Iowa State's offense this year and don't see that as a concern. Take Baylor.
Missouri at #13 South Carolina -5
Las Vegas odds makers are having trouble figuring out this South Carolina team and keep making large adjustments on every win or loss. This time they went too far with respect for the Gamecocks as Missouri has the offense to score 40 against this team. Take the Tigers to keep it close.
#8 Notre Dame -9 at Syracuse
The Fighting Irish have looked tremendous thus far but I'm not sold on them being any more than an above average squad. Syracuse does a lot of things well and their ability to run the ball should keep them close enough to cover the point spread as Notre Dame gets knocked down to Earth a bit.
Arkansas at #6 Texas A&M -9.5
Texas A&M is very similar to Baylor in scheme and ways they lose. The team will score against anyone but they score so quickly the defense gets gassed. While Iowa State in the example above isn't capable of matching the offense, Arkansas most certaintly is. Look for the Razorbacks to rush for 300+ yards as they pull the upset.
#16 Stanford -7 at Washington
Washington has looked good at times but I'm not sold they are anything more than average. The Huskies are learning new schemes with a new coaching staff and it's still early in the season. Stanford meanwhile has a veteran quarterback and ton of experience with the coaching staff. Take the Cardinal to win easily.
#1 Florida State -18.5 at N.C. State
The Seminoles are a great team and have Jameis Winston back but this is the one game on their schedule that I thought they could lose heading into the season. The Wolfpack are a million times better than in previous years and are excellent on both sides of the ball. It's a stretch but I'm calling for #1 to fall in week 5.
Memhpis at #10 Ole Miss -21
Many college football insiders are taking Memphis to stay close in this one but I just don't see it. Ole Miss has been underrated all season long and I had them pegged as a potential SEC Champion before the year started. The Rebels have the defense to completely shut down the Tigers and the offense to score 30+ on just about anyone. Look for a 30+ point blowout.
